Pure hockey porn. This was the Avs tacking on the extra point of the touchdown they threw up on the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday. That’s the 2-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning, mind you. Right now the Avs just seem unstoppable. Everyone knows the big names of MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, and Makar, but the Avs are getting goals from their depth guys like Josh Manson and Darren Helm. Val Nichushkin is stepping up on the games biggest stage. These Avs are just a joy to watch and the video above is a perfect example of that. MacKinnon draws all the eyes to him and then it’s 2 quick passes against a group of 4 penalty killers who were absolutely gassed and before you know it, Cale Makar is going top ched. It’s great that the Avs finally broke through this year and got out of the second round because more people need to know who Cale Makar is. The kid is just 23 years old and he might be the second best player in the world right now behind McDavid. He’s about to win his first of many Norris trophies and has a good chance to add a Stanley Cup ring and Conn Smythe trophy to his trophy case that already has a Calder Trophy and a Hobey Baker Award.
Should be interesting to see how the Lightning bounce back on home ice. They were in this same situation last round against the Rangers and reeled off 4 straight wins. It sounds like the Avs may be without Andre Burakovsky for a few games and Nazem Kadri is still probably a few games away from a return so the Avs being down 2 of their top-6 forwards may be just what Tampa needs to even the series. They were expected to have the health advantage with Brayden Point making his return, but he has been invisible up to this point. If the Lightning want to get back in this series, they are going to need their star players to be the best players on the ice for the next 2 games. I hope they do because I really need this series to go 7 before we sink into the dog days of summer baseball and having to watch the Cubs get curb stomped 7 days a week.
