The Alberta Smackdown Somehow Gets Crazier

The Alberta Smackdown was back tonight with fewer fights and more insanity. The Oilers grabbed a 3-1 series lead with a 5-3 win over the Flames that featured a crazy goal.

The Edmonton Oilers continued their dominance through the first period. They immediately lit up Jacob Markstrom with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal 21 seconds into the game. In that same period, Zach Hyman and Evander Kane would have ones of their own. Finally, finally, the Flames bounded back into the second period.

First Elias Lindholm absolutely sniped one on the power play past Mike Smith to break the shutout:

They desperately needed that goal to get some pep in their step. It did just that because 36 seconds later Mikael Backlund got this game within one:

They couldn’t tie it in the second’s final half, but they kept that goal-scoring energy up going into the third. This goal might be the wildest in this series – in ANY SERIES. Rasmus Andersson scored on Mike Smith from 132 feet away:

132 feet. A goal from 132 feet to tie this game at 3! Smith is looking around like there is someone else to blame but himself.

That tie only lasted 6 minutes as Nugent-Hopkins grabbed the lead back for the Oilers. Then the damage was added with an empty netter from Evander Kane. The Oilers grabbed this game 5-3 and now they have a 3-1 lead in the series. Game 5 is set for Thursday night and the Flames need to be on to save their season. This has been a chaotic series so far so I don’t think it’s done just yet. The Flames fell hard on themselves these last two games but they know that have the power to dominate these games. They’ll be heading back to Calgary for this next game so hopefully, the energy of their hometown crowd boosts them up to grab a W and hang on.
