This is nothing better than a spectacular Kentucky Derby race. Nothing better.
The Kentucky Derby is the best 2 minutes of my year. Every time, without fail, it has me enraptured. This year may have been the best one yet. See I love horse racing and a big reason why is because I understand the gambling side. There’s a lot you can tell about a horse by the odds. Every year, my family does a little pool for the Derby. We place a $2 bet on all the horses and then draw which ones we root for out of a hat. This year, I was in Indianapolis celebrating some friends’ graduations and they didn’t have cable. The only way I could watch was on some shitty YouTube stream that was very low quality and had no audio whatsoever. But, looking at the odds of the horses my brother pulled from the hat for me, I still knew I had some okay horses on my hands (5-1, 12-1, 42-1).
That is the beauty of the Kentucky Derby. No matter what the odds, anything in the world can happen. In this case, one speedy underdog zig-zagged this way through a (literal) stampede to victory.
Rich Strike, a replacement horse with 80-1 odds, maneuvered his way (with Sonny Leon’s help) to one of the most thrilling Kentucky Derby wins in history. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on my tiny phone screen. How did he do that?! Where did he come from? This is where:
The Kentucky Derby is magical. That inside lane opened up and he was gone. I couldn’t believe it actually happened. And yes, this does mean that my little brother will hold this win over my head for the next 10 years.
It was an exhilarating win for one of, if not the best sporting event of the year. Not to mention, you gotta respect a horse who goes to start a fight after winning the biggest race of his career.
