With a 4-2 final score in today’s Isobel Cup Final against the Connecticut Whale, the Boston Pride have won their 3rd Isobel Cup in the last 4 years, their second straight. This was a thrilling game. The underdog Whale held their own against this powerhouse Boston team.
Boston got on the board early in the first period with a goal from captain Jillian Dempsey.
The Whale turned around at the end of the period and showed the Pride that they weren’t going to get their next Cup that easy. Amanda Conway, who is a superstar, tied things up in the dying minutes of the first:
Tides turned real quick in the third period. Boston’s Taylor Wenczkowski got the Pride the lead just 7 minutes into the final frame.
Boston defended that lead and eventually, the Whale pulled goaltender Abbie Ives to try and get it even. Inevitably, the Pride scored that final goal with 1:30 to go in the game and sealed their second straight Isobel Cup win.
Taylor Wenczkowski was awarded MVP, obviously because of her great play all year (8G 7A in 20GP) as well as scoring the GWG in this Final. Captain Jillian Dempsey accepted the Cup and presented it to her eager team.
I was rooting for the Whale in this one, despite the fact they knocked my Minnesota Whitecaps out of the tournament. They geared up heavily before this off-season and were prepared to make the full run. They really wanted to win this one for Captain Shannon Doyle Turner in her final season but they fell just short. Going from one of the last teams in the league to Isobel Cup Finalists is impressive as hell though and I hope we see more of that in the future from them.
The Pride have been on this insane level for years now so it makes sense they pulled this one out. The city of Boston loves their Champions and I’m sure all the videos e see over the next few days will be phenomenal.
