With his game-tying goal in the Capitals’ 4-3 shootout win over the New York Islanders earlier this evening, Alex Ovechkin has officially passed Jaromir Jagr for third All-Time in NHL goals.
Ovechkin clapped this one in so quick off the face-off almost no one saw it but he knew right away. He sends that beauty in and immediately starts celebrating, slowly followed by his linemates, and not before long, all of the Caps get on the ice to celebrate with him.
We all knew he’d make it here and it’s as sweet as can be. Now Ovi is just 34 goals away from catching Gordie Howe at 801 in second place. Ovechkin has 37 goals so far this season and he has gotten up to 50 or 60 on a season when he was younger. He could definitely lessen that gap significantly this season but I don’t think he’ll completely close it. However, this is Alex Ovechkin we’re talking about, he can do anything he puts his mind to.
