Team USA’s women’s hockey team is going into Monday with a confident 3-0 record over in Beijing. They added to that record with 2 back-to-back shutouts against the ROC and Switzerland this weekend.
Yesterday this team started bright and early with the US, once again, slamming through the Russian Olympic Council in a 5-0 shutout. It was the young guns who powered this game. Jesse Compher, Savannah Harmon, and Grace Zumwinkle all contributed some goals in this one. Savannah Harmon got her’s as the lone goal in the first, 12:29 in. Hilary Knight collected a key assist on this goal, it moved her up in US Olympic women’s hockey history. She’s moved to 4th all-time in points and second all-time in assists.
Knight, ever the superstar, added to the score with a lone goal through the second period. The US took a 2-0 lead into the third and dialed things up a notch from the get-go. Three minutes in Grace Zumwinkle came in with a goal and 2 minutes after that Jesse Compher added one of her own. And to tie it all in a nice little bow, Alex Carpenter scored another for herself (her 3rd of the Games so far) and the US carried this game to a 5-0 win.
Nicole Hensley stopped just 12 shots that game, meanwhile, the US put up 62 shots on net. Bananalands of a shot clock there. Here are the highlights:
Flash forward to this morning when the US went 8-0 against Switzerland. Hilary Knight, Jesse Compher, and Kelly Pannek had themselves a field day today. The US started off with a 5-goal first period.
Hilary Knight grabbed the first goal of the game 5:40 into the period and the US got quiet for a bit. Jesse Compher was the one to really blow the doors of this place. She scored her first goal of the game and second of the Olympics at 14:04 then 9 seconds after that, Knight got her second of the game, and all of a sudden it was 3-0 USA. The hurt was not done there, obviously. At 16:15, Kelly Pannek scoops in with her first of the game. Amanda Kessel seals the deal with one of her own in the dying seconds of the first.
They came back with some more of that in the second and third periods, not nearly as explosive as the first. Switzerland did swap their goalies headed into the second and I think that helped the Swiss keep their heads above water. Kelly Pannek quickly grabbed her second of the game just 2:22 into the second period. Jesse Compher came in with her own 15 minutes later. Dani Cameranes was the one to score a goal in the final frame so we finish this game with another hard-fought US win.
Goaltender Alex Cavallini made her 2022 Olympic debut in this one, stopping all 8 shots she faced. Meanwhile, the US put up 66 of their own! Here are the highlights:
Incredibly dominant back-to-back for this US team and I think it shows that they’re ready for the big time. Even if absolute idiots want to claim that this sport isn’t for the Olympics because the US is too good, they can kick rocks and gtfo. I loved the performance these players put into this weekend and I cannot wait for more. The US will be taking on Canada next, tomorrow night at 10:10 PM CT. This is the big times, this is who we’re going to need to beat to move on. Canada is currently up 2-0 in the first 3 minutes of their game against the ROC. Safe to say the US vs Canada is going to be a can’t miss game.
