I shouldn’t be celebrating a random Saturday win like it’s the Cup but here we are. The Flyers finally ended their dreaded 13-game losing streak with an OT win against the Kings.
The game went down in the exact fashion you think it did. Going into the third period, the Flyers had a 2-1 lead over the Kings with goals from Gerry Mayhew and Cam Atkinson.
At 9 minutes into the period, the Kings were awarded a power play. Cam Atkinson had other ideas and scored a shorty to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead with just about 10 minutes to go in the game. A 3-1 lead, the most dangerous lead in hockey. And once again, the Hockey Gods were right.
On that same power play, Victor Arvidsson got the Kings another goal to cut the score to 3-2. Then with just 38 seconds remaining in the game, Anze Kopitar shot me in the foot and tied things 3-3. I don’t know why I had hope this would end without OT. Nevertheless, here we are.
Thank God for my boy Scott Laughton. Don’t know where I’d be without him. He decided that this skid was ending here and now. Just a perfect shot that went right between Ivan Provorov‘s legs and this cursed losing streak is finally over.
Another messy game for the Flyers but it’s at least a win and this streak doesn’t go to 14. They went 1-10-2 in January alone and advance their record to 14-22-8 on the season. Hopefully, they start off February with a drastically different tune. They’ll start with facing Winnipeg on the first before getting a whole week off. I’m hoping they get some of their injured players back to maybe get things to relatively mediocre before the season ends. Who knows if they’ll have Claude Giroux next season, maybe the team will finally be sold for some freedom. Who knows what the future holds for the Flyers for now I’m just going to be happy the skid ended.
