Whale Sweep Riveters In Electric Back-To-Back

The Connecticut Whale had themselves a great weekend. The Whale collected their 8th win this season against the Metropolitan Riveters and settled themselves comfortably into 2nd in the league standings.

Before this season started, I had a feeling the Whale were going to have a kick-ass season. They worked hard in the off-season to really shape their team to a contender level and I think they’ve done just that. They grabbed Rebecca Morse from the Riveters as well as Emily Fluke and Janine Weber from the Six to build on the great foundation they started with the wave of incredible rookies they brought on last season. Now they’re reaping what they’ve sowed.

This weekend they played the Riveters and beat them in two electric games while wearing great sweaters that were purple for Alzheimer’s Awareness.

Saturday night they held the Rivs to just one goal while they scored 5 of their own. Those goals came from 5 separate players including the rookie Taylor Girard, future superstar Amanda Conway, and captain Shannon Turner. Turner’s goal was extra special as it was her 100th game in the league.

The Whales’ goaltender Abbie Ives stopped 17 of 18 shots and gave them that confidence to go out there and absolutely dominate. Here are the highlights:

The Whale carried that energy back into their second game against the Rivs earlier today. They didn’t get five on the board but they closed out another win with a 3-2 final. Amanda Conway got another goal in this one. I have been hyping her up forever because I can tell that one day she is going to be the face of this franchise. She’s a phenomenal player, built to be a leader already. The other two goals came from Janine Weber and Janka Hlinka. Abbie Ives once against stood on her head, stopping 15 of 17 shots this time. Here are the highlights:

Overall, successful weekend for the Whale but they’re going to need to keep this going to next weekend. The Whale will be moving on from here to play two back-to-back games against the Toronto Six, who are currently 1st in the league. The last time these two faced off back in November the Six won with games, 1-5 and 2-3. Those two games are going to be must watch. The Whale are having a phenomenal season and I am excited to see if they can get a deep playoff run out of it.
