The second I saw Evgeni Malkin was playing tonight, I knew he was going to be scoring some goals.
After a knee surgery this offseason, Malkin missed the first part of this season recovering. Throughout his whole time rehabbing he remained positive and optimistic about his return. That set him up for a confident season debut tonight against the Anaheim Ducks.
It only took one period for Geno to get on the score sheet. He swooped in just 3:23 into the second on the power play to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.
Anaheim came back with one of their own but Geno ensured the Pens lead. He added his second of the game just 11 minutes after his first goal.
That wasn’t the only time he was on the score sheet either. He also assisted on Jeff Carter’s goal late in the third period to finish the night with 3 points. Malkin also had 4 shots on net and 17:21 in ice time, including some powerplay time which proved fruitful. I’d say a pretty successful night for a 35-year-old returning from knee surgery. He’s always good for that though. Always growing, always stunning — that’s just Geno. He’s one of my favorite players in this league because of that.
The postgame interview hasn’t started yet but I bet the quotes will be legendary.
