That right there is beautiful. The Kalamazoo Wings just gained a new fan (spoiler: it me).
I’ve said a zillion times on this blog how much Pride games and support means to me, a queer hockey fan. The Kalamazoo Wings have gone above and beyond with this one. Not only have they painted the ice with a nice rainbow flag, they kept on the Pride night jerseys even during the game!
Said Pride jerseys will be auctioned off and all proceeds will go to an organization called SWMI Miracle League, a non-profit organization that is raising money to build a field in Southwest Michigan that will allow kids of all abilities to play baseball.
I love to see this kind of support and inclusivity coming from the ECHL. It seems to be giving them some extra luck, the Wings are up 2-1 after 2 periods of play. Not to mention, as a proud Chicagoan, I loved finding out they have a DeBrincat of their own! Andrew DeBrincat, brother is the Blackhawk’s Alex, scored a goal tonight:
Congrats Kalamazoo, you’ve been added to my list of teams. Currently Kalamazoo is 15-10-10, 5th in the Central Division. I don’t usually follow the ECHL but I’m liking this team and their energy a lot already, plus I’ll always root for a DeBrincat.
They’ve started strong in their game against the Toledo Walleye tonight and I hope they keep it going through this final frame.
