Jack Hughes is heating up in New Jersey. The 20-year-old has put up 8 points in his last 3 games, 3 goals, 5 assists. He put up 6 of those points in just 2 games before the New Year. On the 29th against the Buffalo Sabres, he had a goal and 2 assists in 17:52 of ice time. Then two days later, the Devils played Edmonton just hours before we hit the New Year. Hughes had 2 goals and an assist in 19:40 of ice time. One of those goals was the OT winner, which seems like a normal thing for him to do nowadays:
Then tonight against the Capitals, Hughes had 2 assists in 20:17 of ice time. His first assist came on Yegor Sharangovich’s opening goal of the game. The second came on captain Nico Hischier’s OT winner:
Hughes has been having himself the great season we all knew was coming. He started slower in the NHL because he was just an 18-year-old kid trying to find his stride in the league and on a team that didn’t really have an identity. Now, he’s 20, he’s got over 100 games under his belt, and he’s really found his game with this team. In 16 games so far this season, he’s got 8 goals and 8 assists for 16 points. I’m sure he’ll continue this multi-point per game streak as New Jersey heads into Boston this Tuesday, then to Columbus on Thursday. We all knew he is an incredible player to watch but it’s great to see that happening almost every night. The kid deserves it. (I think the fresh haircut is magic though, can’t lie)
