For the second godforsaken year in a row, the IIHF has canceled the Women’s U18 World Championships.
For the past two years, the IIHF has canceled the U18 Women’s World Championships. Last year they canceled it in September when they announced the canceling of all their upcoming tournaments – although some were re-scheduled. Then, it’s been said earlier this evening that the IIHF is going to cancel the upcoming January 2022 events, including the U18 Women’s World Championships scheduled for January 8th-15th. Meanwhile, they’ve allowed the Men’s tournaments to play on with little stopping them. It’s flat-out, utter, complete BULLSHIT. How are these girls supposed to develop to grow into the next generation of superstars when they can’t even compete because the IIHF shuts down their tournaments with no second chances? How is women’s hockey supposed to build to that level of success and fame the men got a 50-year+ head start on when at every turn they don’t get the same chance or treatment? No postponement, no re-scheduling, just flat-out canceling time and time again. It’s absolute disrespectful bullshit.
As we speak, games are happening up in Edmonton for the Men’s World Juniors, same as last year. At that same time, these women are losing another opportunity to showcase their talents, represent their country, get scouted for a chance to play pro, and show the world what’s next for women’s hockey. We keep asking and fighting for a chance to bring women’s hockey to the main stage and at every turn there’s just another way for people to shoot it down. These women don’t get the same funding, the same access to all the luxuries the guys get but they make it work because all they want is a chance to play for a living. They want a chance to bring honor to their country by playing the great game of hockey and maybe winning a gold medal. Well the IIHF won’t even let them do that. There is no equivalent to the World Juniors for women so they have this Championship to show their skills and the IIHF won’t even let them have a chance at that.
I hope they reschedule these games because those girls deserve to be in the spotlight. Do better, IIHF.
