It’s finally time. I have been waiting for this day for years.
I haven’t bought an NHL game since 2018. I’m not great at them, I usually prefer to play an open world game compared to a sports one. But I can confidently say I will be buying NHL 22 specifically to play as the women’s teams that are being added. That’s right, EA announced earlier today that they will be adding the Women’s World Championships to their game for the first time ever, as well as the Men’s Championships and World Juniors.
Now you can log onto NHL 22 and get some IIHF content today. According to EA’s site, the IIHF stuff is available from today (December 9th) until January 10th, 2022. Starting today you can get the Men’s WC and World Juniors. However, according to EA, in January 2022, you’ll be able to play as Team USA or Team Canada (they say WWC but the only teams I see are the USA and Canada) with NHL 22 Play Now. I hope it’s not just during the Championships, or like from January 1st to the 10th, I hope it’s going to be playable for as long as you have the game. If they do bullshit us and only have it for 10 days, I am going to be pissed.
Women’s hockey in North America is in its Golden era. We have been blessed with years of future Hall of Famers taking USA Hockey to the moon. A lot of these players we know well, we’ve seen them soar for the better part of a decade, like Knight, Coyne-Schofield, or Poulin. Having their teams in this game is massive for women’s hockey as a whole but they also need to advertise the shit out of some of the younger players, like Abby Roque, Grace Zumwinkle, Jesse Compher, or Sarah Fillier. They’re the future of this sport in North America and having people know who they are is important because one day, as much as it sucks to say, Knight and Schofield will retire. Knowing the young, up-and-coming Olympians will be vital to the longevity of this Golden ear.
I am absolutely terrible at Chel, I am close to no good especially because I haven’t played in years. But you bet your ass I’ll be training up and playing this game as long as I can be Hilary Knight or Kendall Coyne-Schofield. Give me a US vs Canada showdown, Cavallini in net staring down Marie-Philip Poulin. Let me feel like I am a part of this insane rivalry between the clubs. I might be dog water at the game but I’ll fight tooth and nail for a Team USA win. Let me live out my silly little dreams as a member of Team USA. (If I am allowed to customize a player and add her to the roster, I will be on cloud nine.)
