Alex Newhook of the Colorado Avalanche scored an absolute beauty of a GWG tonight in the Av’s win against Ottawa. With a minute and a half left in a 5-5 game, Newhook collects the puck after it bounced off the goalie’s chest, slips it around the goaltender to give the Avs the lead. Check it out right here:
I’ve watched it like 6 times and it’s awesome every time. The 21-year-old center was just called up because of the Avs’ recurring injury problem and he’s letting this team know that he’s ready for the big show. Before the call-up, he was doing great in the AHL with the Colorado Eagles. In the first 10 games of the season, Newhook put up 11 points (4G 7A). Now since he’s played 6 NHL games with 4 points (2G 2A) while averaging between 10 and 16 minutes a game.
He’s going to have a big career once he cracks into this team. He’s shaping up to be a guy you really want on the ice in a pinch when you’re gown. As Kyle Keefe pointed out on Twitter, Newhook has 3 career goals and they’re all game-winners (2 in regular season, 1 in playoffs).
The Avs have once again been amazing despite their injuries. Nazem Kadri, who is leading the team in points, had himself a 4-point night and he’s got 19 points in the last 9 games. They’re 9-5-1 on the season, regardless of missing their top forward and starting goalie. I’m so mad I haven’t had the time to watch more games this season because every highlight reel has been a joy. This Avs team is resilient and amazing. They play the Ducks Wednesday night and I think people have really underestimated the Ducks a lot this season. They’ve been better than anticipated, they’ve got great young talent so watching these two match up should be fun.
For the road, here’s another look at that goal:
