Two games under King, two wins. These Hawks are buzzing right now.
This game went all the way to the shootout but in the end, it was Alex DeBrincat who saved the day again. Before that, Jujhar Khaira and Seth Jones both scored their first goals as Blackhawks in the second period. Khaira scored his 2 minutes into the second period and gave the Hawks a 0-1 lead over the Penguins. Then Jones added to that lead 13 minutes later.
The Hawks kept that lead 5:34 into the 3rd when Jeff Carter broke the Hawks’ shutout. Carter struck again 10 minutes after that and tied this game 2-2 with just 5 left. Those final minutes were excruciating and neither team could break the tie so to OT we went.
The Hawks, play-wise, absolutely killed it in OT. It looked like Kaner was going to end this with literal seconds left but his shot went just wide. My heart would have just exploded if he made that. Unbelievable. But again, neither team could score so we went to a shootout. Fleury was already killing it in this game and he did that again in the shootout. Both the Penguin’s shots stayed out of the net while 2/3 Hawks shooters (Toews and DeBrincat) scored to end this game and give King 2 wins in just 2 games as interim head coach.
This team is looking incredible compared to where we started. I think Seth Jones and Calvin de Haan had incredible games. Jones not only scored he had 5 shots, 3 blocks, and 2 hits in 31:24 of ice time. The de Haan had 4 blocks and 2 hits in 18:12 of ice time. Of course, Marc-Andre Fluery had an incredible night as well. He stopped 42 of 44 shots, plus the two saves in the shootout. He’s had a rough start to this seas but I thought he looked great tonight against his old team.
Now the Hawks are off until Friday night where they’ll face the Coyotes, who are 1-10-1 right now. I think if we play the same way we have so far we’ll collect another W. The ball is rolling, things are looking good. I’m excited to see what happens next.
