Erik Johnson Has Scored His First Goal Since March 2020

For the first time since March 6th, 2020, Erik Johnson has scored a goal.

If you don’t follow Colorado, you might not have known that Johnson only played 4 games last season before being sidelined the rest of the season with a concussion. EJ has always been one of my favorite players on the Avalanche so to see him sidelined for that long had me a bit worried. However, it was a sweet (early) Halloween treat to see him score his first goal in well over a year.

It starts with Nate MacKinnon doing “Sidney Crosby Protege” things along the wall, jumping to avoid a Wild player then slamming another down on the ice all while maintaining puck control. MacKinnon then sends a pass perfectly to Johnson and Johnson shoots it to the back of the net. Colorado ends up leaving that period 2-1, a great spot to be in headed into the final 20 minutes.

I’m so excited for Johnson to be back in the NHL. He has been a key player in Colorado’s defense for so long and despite the great young guys they’ve had to fill in, EJ was deeply missed while he was recovering. He’s still averaging about 20 minutes per game, blocking a large number of shots, and being a delight on the PK. He’s looked overall great tonight and I’m excited to see more of him as the season progresses.
