(That title would be a good name for a children’s book)
Joe Thornton has signed a one year deal with the Florida Panthers. At the ripe age of 42, the legendary Jumbo is heading to Florida for another run at the Stanley Cup. He’s just coming off a single season in Toronto where he made a lasting impression. He played in 44 games with 20 points (5G 15A) and an average of 13:43 per game. In the 7 playoff games the Leafs saw, he had a goal and averaged 10:51 per game. His impression was deeper off the ice than on the ice, in my humble opinion. He was close with the team and a real leader to the heap of young guys that have there. Not to mention when someone says “Joe Thornton” and Toronto” in the same sentence, I think of this more than anything–

I think he’ll fit right in in the state of Florida.
Everyone in the hockey world knows Joe is chasing the Stanley Cup and the Panthers was an interesting route to take for that. He’ll be playing in his 24th season and this time it’ll be under coach Joel Quenneville. The Panthers held their own pretty well against the reigning Stanley Cup Champs last playoffs but they did fall in the first round. They’ve made a few moves this offseason but overall, adding a player like Joe Thornton on your roster is always a plus.
I’m happy he’s going to continue playing and it will be fun to watch him on another new team. We still have about 2 months till the start of the hockey season so let’s see what other wild cards get pulled before then.
