There is one reason I ever started giving a shit about history and it’s because of School House Rock. I was in 5th grade when our teachers decided that they were going to do a 5th grade talent show and all the 5th graders were going to make a dance to a School House Rock song. Just those social studies ones, not the math. So for that solid month all I heard was these songs and to this day, they’re all just bangers.
To start, I get “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World” stuck in my head twice a week.
Perhaps the greatest one yet-
Whenever I say something about going west, I have to say the full chorus out loud. I’d play “Elbow Room” at a packed bar.
I don’t think anyone had to do a dance to Mother Necessity but this song is so good. Taught me more about inventors than any teacher.
Now I only remember that the kids who had to do “The Preamble” were in front of us at that 5th grade talent show so it immediately triggers my anxiety 10 years later. However, I do know the Preamble because of this song.
Now last but not lest, the song my group had to perform. Oh yeah baby, “I’m Gonna Send Your Vote to the College”. I would have no clue what the electoral college was without this video. I think it’s bullshit but I know what it is. Also it’s been 10 years since I did this whole talent show and I still remember parts of the dance. We were great, we were certain that we were going to win but then the principal pulled that “we think everyone is a winner” bullshit. Still mad, way to coddle a group of annoying 11-year-olds.
I don’t know what kind of crack they put in these songs but they still slap to this day. I fall down random YouTube rabbit holes with all of these songs and then for weeks I’m singing about how a bill becomes a law. Regardless, it’s a Saturday night, smoke a bowl and throw on some Schoolhouse Rock. It will not disappoint.
