(Yes, my last 3 blogs have been about the Avs. Kick rocks, my blog my rules.)
Break out every broom you have because the Colorado Avalanche just demolished the Blues like they were hungover teens at a continental breakfast. Any day I get to see a St. Louis team lose is a great day and the past 4 game days, the Avalanche have made sure that I have had the best day. This Colorado team tore through the Blues like they were nothing. Take a look at the final scores:
Game 1: Colorado 4 – St. Louis 1
Game 2: Colorado 6 – St. Louis 3
Game 3: Colorado 5 – St. Louis 1
Game 4: Colorado 5 – St. Louis 2
Colorado had 20 goals for and just 7 goals against. They lead the Blues in most of the series, they had just 2 players not register a point in those games – Conor Timmins and Patrik Nemeth. Even goalie Philipp Grubauer scooped his own assist earlier today. Their depth is so deep, whoever is on the ice is a threat. It starts with the top line of Gabe Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, and Mikko Rantanen. Between the 3 of them in 4 games, they had 9 goals and 15 assists. Nate Mac had 6 of those goals. Aaaand that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You got Brandon Saad, Joonas Donskoi, Tyson Jost and his buddy JT Compher – it’s literally an entire roster of point producers.
Their defense, despite missing a key piece in Erik Johnson, has been steady. Cale Makar has been a miracle worker with this group. Him, Sammy Girard, and Ryan Graves have been stand out so far in the playoffs. If the Avs want to keep their offense on the high end, they’ll need the defense to keep up the good work.
And last but not least – ladies and gentlemen – Philipp fuckin Grubauer. That guy has been unreal in net. He faced 110 shots and only allowed 7 to get past him. That’s a .936 save percentage. He was absolutely fantastic so there is no question in my mind that they’ll keep him moving forward.
No matter who the Avs play in Round 2, I’m taking the Avs. This team is special and I think they have what it takes this year. We’re waiting to hear what is of rookie Alex Newhook, who left the game early today. It will be a bit before the start of Round 2 so hopefully, Newhook and some of the other IR guys can rest and heal before then. For now, we just have to sit, wait, and celebrate this sweep a bit more. Maybe watch some highlight reels and listen to Blink-182 until then.
