In just 4 games with the Detroit Red Wings, Jakub Vrana has put on a good show.
The 25-year-old Czech got traded from Washington to Detroit at the NHL deadline. Before heading to Michigan, Vrana had put up 25 points (11G 14A) in 39 games with an average of 14:22 on the ice per game and a +9 rating. Although that’s a pretty good start to the season, everything has changed with this shortened season. Vrana was scratched a few times leading up to the trade and you could smell the blood in the water. The Caps want to make as many runs to the Cup as they can with Ovi so they thought change was needed. They sent Vrana, Richard Panik, and a few picks over to Detroit in exchange for Anthony Mantha.
Well it seems a change of scenery has done Vrana some good. In his first 3 games with the Red Wings, he had 2 points (1G 1A) while averaging 17:51 per game. Deeeecent. Then tonight against the Dallas Stars, Vrana kicked it into high gear. The kid put up 4 goals in the 15:07 he played. Not too bad for the new kid, eh?
As a past 1st round pick (13th overall), there was a lot of expectations for who he was supposed to be. He’s already got a Cup with the Capitals but he still struggled at times over there. Maybe a less high-stress situation in a city that embraces their team will do him some good, give him a confidence boost. Although this season is most likely a wash for Detroit, I can sense something good happening with this kid.
