The Maple Leafs have brought back 23-year-old defenseman Travis Dermott on a 1-year, $874,125 contract. Dermott is the Leaf’s final RFA after a busy off-season, he played in 56 games this season with 11 points (4G 7A) and a +11 rating. Dermott is a good kid, I like him for Toronto BUT much like I talked about with Vancouver this morning, the Leafs are in a tough financial situation.
The Leafs are over the cap limit (no surprise there) and they’ll have to find a way to clear some space for the upcoming season. The Leafs have 3 players that have over $10 mill on the cap hit and the team is gonna be in a hole come next off-season. They have 6 forwards, 3 defensemen, and one goalie going onto free agency. Sure, Dubas has been able to get all of these players but the actual managing and retaining of them is going to be a shitshow moving forward. If he can pull it off then I’ll be damned, Kyle Dubas is a God among GMs. If he can’e I’m not surprised. Overall, Dermott is a good move for next season but time will tell if things go well.
