Bobby Ryan, winner of the 2019-2020 Masterton is being bought out by his team, the Ottawa Senators ,today. It’s the first buyout of the 2020 season and it sucks so much it has to be Bobby.
On one side- the guys just won the Masterson, rightfully so. In late November, Ryan entered the NHL/NHLPA’s player assistance program for alcohol addiction. Ryan returned to the game on February 27th with an astounding hat trick before Ottawa’s home crowd. Not only that, on June 5th Sportsnet dropped a 25 minute documentary called “The Secret Life of Bobby Ryan” about a traumatic event Ryan went through as a kid and why he does by “Bobby Ryan”. He’s a great guy and a great player who has been through hell and back so you hate to see him get bought out off the bat.
On the other hand: this is a pure hockey move here. It has nothing to do with Ryan and what he’s been through. This is about the Sens and what they’re trying to do – rebuild. They want to clear up cap space and make room for different players, letting go of Ryan does that for them. As good as Ryan is, the Sens are heading more for youthful players to build around guys like Brady Tkachuk, Colin White, and Thomas Chabot.
I’m sure wherever he goes he’ll find success it’s just a question of who can take that cap on. With Ryan you get a smart, strong veteran who could help any locker room but what he’s asking for will dictate where he goes. Some teams could use that player but they don’t have the cap space.
As a Hawks fan, I don’t think they should go for him. His price is too high, I don’t think we have space. He can make some costly defensive mistakes and we have enough of that right now. We have enough vets as is, the Hawks need to focus on getting younger guys who can keep up.
Moving forward, I’d keep an eye on teams like Columbus or the Islanders – I think they’ll be dropping some players and looking for others to slot in. Both teams could use a vet’s touch as well. For now whose to say. I do love Bobby Ryan so I wish him all the best wherever he goes from here.
