NHL Announces Calder Nominees But I Won’t Let My Heart Get Broken Again

The NHL is starting to drop the list of Award Nominees so today, we’re talking about the Calder. Last year, I went on a tear when Miro Heiskanen wasn’t nominated for the Calder but this year, I’m more conflicted about who is gonna get it.

Sadly last on my list is Dominik Kubalik from the Chicago Blackhawks. They’re my team and Kubalik is fantastic. He put up 30 goals and 16 assists (46 points) in 68 games. The kid was electric this season (so far).

But I know better than to let my heart get broken. (Again)

The coin flip is between defensemen Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar.

Hughes had 53 points (8G 45A) in 68 games. He averages 21:53 per game and has a 52.7% Corsi For throughout the season. Now Makar has 50 points (12G 38A) in 57 games. He averages 21:01 per game and put up a 52.8% Corsi For this season.

Even their style of play is similar. Both Makar and Hughes are fast, offensively-minded defensemen. They’re also both “small” guys. Hughes is 5’10 175lbs. Makar is 5’11” 187lbs. It is literally a coin flip.

But my vote goes to Makar. I’ve seen him play more consistently than Hughes. They both are strong players who are the future of the league but the guy who blew me away this year was Makar.
