June 12th: Pulse Nightclub

Tonight, we’re not talking about specifically one person. This is another serious post. I usually keep these light-hearted and give you some good news but today is a tragic anniversary. Tonight, we remember the 49 lives lost 4 years ago today.

On June 12th, 2016, it was Latin Night at the Pulse Nightclub -a club for LGBT people in Orlando, Florida. That night, at 2:02AM, a 29-year-old man entered the club and opened fire, killing 49 people and wounding 53 others. The mass shooting was a terrorist attack and a targeted attack against the LGBT+ community.

I’m not delving into the nitty-gritty detail about this tragic event. It’s horrifying, it’s my worst nightmare. I’ve seen the clips, heard the voicemails and they’re absolutely chilling.

pulse victims

This is another event that I remember vividly. I remember constantly just refreshing Twitter and crying. My best friend had just got a car so she was cleaning it and I was in the front seat, refreshing, sharing any news I could find. I remember being terrified for the future at 16-years-old.

In the time since we have not seen a change to gun laws. Both of the weapons used were semi-automatic and the photos of what shots had done to the side of the building is disturbing. No one in civilian America needs a fucking semi-automatic gun like that. We’ve seen countless mass shootings involving semi-automatic weapons and still no. fucking. change.

Now, on the four year Anniversary, the idiot in charge of this country has announced the anti-discrimination against LGBT+ people when it comes to healthcare will be erased. This erasure heavily affects transgender people.

This was announced today. On the fourth anniversary of Pulse. During Pride Month. In a Pandemic.

Hey Trump, fuck you. People are mourning, people are terrified. This isn’t a coincidence. Vote this asshole out in November. He’s a homophobic, transphobic, racist piece of garbage who needs to get the fuck out. Today was a day of mourning, of remember in our community and he spit in our faces while we cried. Fuck him.

And if you’re a kid, terrified and watching all of this unfold, terrified about the future like I was at 16, I see you and I promise you that as an adult who can vote and who can protest and sign petitions, I’ll do what I can to help keep you and your rights safe.

Rest in Peace to the 49 people killed that night.
