Change is coming to pro hockey.
Today, Evander Kane, Akim Aliu, Trevor Daley, Matt Dumba, Wayne Simmonds, Chris Stewart, and Joel Ward were the first 7 players to announce the Hockey Diversity Alliance. Saroya Tinker of the NWHL has also reached out to Evander Kane and the Alliance to join them.Â
I’m sure we’ll be seeing even more players joining the cause, hopefully, players like Blake Bolden, Angela James, and Sarah Nurse, who is a part of the PWHPA, will join the movement as well. Nurse just gave a great interview over at Sportsnet encouraging Canadians to not suppress and erase Black history. You can read it here.
Kane and Aliu will co-head the alliance that will work to disband racism in hockey and enforce accountability. They will host charity fundraisers for organizations that put a stop to racism in sports.Â
This is a big deal for the hockey world. Especially if it can bring together pro athletes from different leagues and help make a change. The NHL’s “Player Safety” and front offices won’t make the push so it’s up to the people who live through it. I am 100% on board with this organization and I’ll do anything I can to help their cause.Â
