Bringing You NWHL Round 1 and Round 2 Picks

Happy Draft Day 1! Today was Rounds 1 and 2 of the NWHL draft so let’s go over some of the NWHL’s newest players.

First off, the draft picks were switched around. Earlier, the Boston Pride traded with Toronto to get the first overall pick as well as flip-flopping some other picks in this draft and next season’s.

The Pride did well with it too, the team selected Sammy Davis from Boston University with their first overall pick. Davis is a small 23-year-old forward. In her 4th season with BU, Davis, as captain, played in 36 games with 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points. Brilliant pick for the Pride. They weren’t in need of another strong forward but you can never have enough.

Kayla Friesen goes to the Connecticut Whale 2nd overall. Friesen is a forward from Clarkson University. Last season was her first with Clarkson and she put up 30 points (10G 20A) in just 28 games! The Whale needs some good offensive players so starting with a forward is a good move.

Carly Jackson from the University of Maine goes 3rd overall to the Buffalo Beauts. The 22-year-old goalie played in 32 games with UoM and had a 1.90 GAA and .934 save percentage.

The Metropolitan Riveters have selected Saroya Tinker from Yale University at 4th overall. The 22-year-old defenseman has been with Yale for 4 seasons. In her senior season, she played in 32 games with 1 goal and 11 assists for 12 points and a +1 rating. The Rivs can use a spry defenseman on their blue line so I’m good with this pick.

The Minnesota Whitecaps used their 5th overall pick to get Alex Woken, a forward from the University of Minnesota. The 22-year-old forward wore the A in her senior season at the University of Minnesota, she also put up 32 points (16G 16A) in 36 games.

Toronto had their first pick in franchise history and they went with Jaycee Gebhard, a forward from Robert Morris University. The 22-year-old centre was Captain in ser senior season and put up a whopping 63 points (20G 43A) in 36 games. She’s a steal for Toronto and a great building stone for their team.

Now, let’s move on to Round 2! In the 2nd Round, we saw even more talented players drafted totaling to 3 defensemen and 3 forwards.

With the first pick in the 2nd Round and 7th overall, the Connecticut Whale have selected Victoria Howran from the University of New Hampshire. Howran is a 21-year-old defenseman that captained her senior year team at the University of New Hampshire. In that season, she put up 22 points (2G 20A) in 37 games.

The 8th overall pick was Toronto’s and they selected Amy Curlew, a forward from Cornell University. The 22-year old forward played in 32 games this season with Cornell, putting together 22 points (9G 13A) and a +30 rating. Another strong forward to start their team with.

Next, the Buffalo Beauts have selected Codie Cross, a defenseman from Northeastern University at 9th overall. Cross is 22-years-old and played 4 seasons at Northeastern. In her final season, she put up 16 points (4G 12A) in 33 games with a +27 rating.

The Riveters picked 10th overall and selected Delaney Belinskas, a forward from Boston University. In her last season at BU, Belinskas played in 35 games with 26 points (20G 6A).

The 11th overall belonged to the Minnesota Whitecaps and they picked Patricia “Patti” Marshall, a defenseman from the University of Minnesota. Marshall is a 22-year-old that played in 34 games this season while wearing the “C” in Minnesota and put up 10 points (1G 9A) and a +16.

The Boston Pride had pick 12 in the NWHL draft, the final pick in Round 2 and they went with Tereza Vanisova, a forward from the University of Maine. The 24-year-old forward played with the University of Maine and the Czech Republic National Team, she played in 33 games with UoM, putting up 31 points (14G 17A) and an additional 8 with the national team, adding 5 points (2G 3A).

Boston did well in round 1 and 2, I like Minnesota’s selections too. Toronto is off to a hot start too. Rounds 3-5 will be tomorrow night at 6 PM CT! I’ll be right here and on Ham Sports twitter reporting every pick so stay tuned!
