The Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks have announced that due to precautions to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, both teams will be playing to empty arenas for the time being.
In San Jose, their ban on public gatherings goes until the end of March so for 3 of their next home games will go without fans. San Jose’s ban goes through April 1st so games are expected to be open after that.
As for Columbus, the Governor passed a mandate today prohibiting mass gatherings, they will be closing their home games to the public from now until further notice.
These 2 teams aren’t the only ones who are adjusting games because of Coronavirus. The NCAA will play the remainder of their games without fans, including the Frozen Four.
Schools are beginning to cancel classes and the NBA is looking at either going on hiatus or playing without fans. March Madness is in danger of being canceled as well.
This is definitely escalating and I don’t think these will be the only NHL teams to play to empty arenas. Now, we can just sit and wait.
