The National League and Swiss League announced today that the start of playoffs will be pushed back to March 15th instead of their scheduled start on March 7th. The postponement is due to the Coronavirus outbreak in Switzerland.
According to this article from a Swiss News site, the number of Swiss infected with the virus is at 24 but the country is taking big measures to prevent the spread of the virus. They’ve imposed a ban on gatherings of more than 1,000 people. Due to that ban, the two final regular seasons games for the National League will be played without any spectators.
The leagues also delayed playoffs for some time as was announced by the National League today.
This is a big step taken to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus. If things get out of hand in the US, it’s a question if the NHL will take measures like this. I’d be completely understanding if they did, people’s livelihood is more important than a hockey game. It definitely leaves you to wonder what the future has in store if things escalate. (If you’re prone to existential crises like me, I don’t suggest pondering that).
