Blackhawks Trade Lehner and Gustafsson

Stan Bowman really waited until the last minute to wake up. #FireBowman

The Blackhawks made 2 trades today and dropped both people we saw coming.

Erik Gustafsson is off to Calgary in a trade for a 3rd round pick.

As for the Buzzer Beater for Robin Lehner, the Blackhawks are sending him to Vegas. In return, the Blackhawks are getting a 2nd Round Pick, Malcolm Subban, and prospect Slava Demin. Subban has a 9-7-3 record with Vegas this year with a .890 save percentage and 3.18 GAA.

Both trades don’t come as a big surprise, I knew they were both likely gone but I wish we got a bit more. Sure picks are great, you can get more prospects to build on but with a team that’s still in the playoff race, you need to focus on the here and now.

For Gustafsson, a 3rd round pick? That’s it?? As much as I shit on Gustafsson, he’s still talented enough to go for more than just a 3rd round pick. My secret trade hope was that we would get maybe Tyson Barrie for Gustafsson and a pick. Barrie could have been a big help on the back end going into the final stretch as we’re aiming for the playoffs but we gave Gustafsson up to the Flames for just a 3rd? Bullshit, Stan.

Lehner was solid for the Hawks when we had him and moving him seems like a mistake here. The defense is a disaster, you just gave up your backup goalie, who is one of the best in the league, that had a 16-10-5 record with 3.01 GAA and .918 save percentage. For (once again) a pick, a prospect, and Malcolm Subban. Lehner offered to take a three-year contract extension for less money to stay with the Blackhawks but Stan said Nah. What?!

I have not been a fan of Bowman for a few years now and this may be the final straw. He’s given away so many promising players (See: Artemi Panarin, Teuvo Teravainen, Niklas Hjalmarsson (more established then promising but-), Michal Kempney, Ryan Hartman, Vinnie Hinostroza, Jordan Oesterle, Dominik Kahun, Henri Jokiharju, need I go oooon) and for what? The team to continually sink?

If the Blackhawks were dead in the water, sure, plan for the future. But we still have a chance at a playoff run and he traded two talented players and didn’t get anything in return to help us now. Instead of collecting players to help push us forward, like Carolina did today, we trade two players and get back two picks, Subban (who is not the steadiest backup), and another defense prospect (add him to the long line that we already have). At least pick up a rental or 2 Stan.

This wasn’t a good deadline for the Hawks and I’m just sick of these same cycles with Bowman. Either trade away promise for prospect or bring back a player we already traded. It’s time for something new.
