The Pittsburgh Penguins have battled every single injury this season and have still been something to marvel at.
Today, the Pens announced that defenseman John Marino will be out a little while longer as the 22-year-old has to have surgery on his broken cheekbone.
Marino took a Steven Stamkos slapshot off the cheek in the Penguins game against the Lightning and has been out since. Marino is a bigger loss for the Pens because of the minutes and pucks this kid eats. This season, the rookie has 25 points (5G 20A) in 51 games but averages 20:19 on the ice and has 71 blocked shots with 65 hits. With him on the ice, the Pens have a 51% Corsi For percentage.
Losing him for however long at this point in the season will be rough but the Penguins are nothing if not resilient. They have the added plus of being 2nd in the Metro with 73 points – 4 points above Columbus in 3rd. Still, carrying on without the guy who helped you get there will be tough. The Penguins will prevail though.
