The Boston Bruins have placed 14-year NHL veteran David Backes on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL. Backes has 1 goal and 2 assists in 16 games played.
It’s been a rough but sharp decline for Backes these last few seasons. Backes used to put up about 40-50 points a season. Since getting to the Boston Bruins in 2016, he hasn’t put up as many and on top of that, he’s been out of the lineup with injury very often. It’s a decline you don’t want to see happen, especially to someone who has done so much and been a big deal on the teams he was on. Players from both the Bruins and Blues praise Backes for his leadership skills and his wise advice. Having to see such a big drop is heartbreaking.
Some people are starting to think that this Backes move might signal a trade on the horizon. Here is what Ty Anderson had to say:
The Bruins have $712 in projected cap space right now, according to Cap Friendly. Clearing up some money and possibly a trade is a good idea right about now. Yet time will tell what happens next but first Backes has to clear.
For now, it sucks to see someone that important and who was big for players in the lockerroom fall like this. All of his teammates have had nothing but positive things to say about this guy but at the end of the day, that’s the hockey business.
