It’s Hockey Fights Cancer Night in the deserts of Arizona and the Arizona Coyotes have signed a new player to help them out tonight. Leighton Accardo is an 8-year-old hockey and softball player who is fighting Stage 4 cancer. Earlier this year, Leighton was released from the hospital after doctors found tumors throughout her body. After being released from the hospital in May, Leighton shaved her head and was joined by her community, you can read that heartwarming story here.
For the Coyotes’ game against the Calgary Flames, the Coyotes signed the 8-year-old to a contract this afternoon. She got quick to work with her new teammates.
Leighton took part in warm-ups with the Hockey Fights Cancer jersey. Prior to taking the ice, she told the team to rub her head for good luck.
Next, she shot the puck a bit and talked cellys with Vinnie Hinostroza.
And for puck drop, Coyotes Captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson insisted that Leighton take the draw and he dropped the puck. Props to Mark Giordano as well.
Great move by the Yotes to do this for a little girl who is fighting such a big battle. You can see in her face that she is having a great time. Keep fighting Leighton!
