There has been some Penguin negativity on Twitter and I’m not having it so here are some positives to focus on.
The Penguins started the season with a banger. In the first 10 games, the Penguins went 6-4-0. The team had a 5 game win streak in the middle and multiple games where they had 7 goals by the end of it. Even with the tough stretch of a 3 game losing streak, this team is still a fireball.
The team’s depth scoring has been amazing so far. The Penguins are 5th in goals in the league with 36 goals for and there are 14 players with at least 1 goal within the first 11 games. From them 9 players that have at least 2 goals. The young Jake Guentzel leads the pack with 6 goals, followed by Patric Hornqvist with 5, and Sidney Crosby is tied for 3rd with Kris Letang at 4 goals. Their line of Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel and, Dominik Simon is playing strong with a combined 31 points (11 G 20 A).
One player that has been eyecatching has been Sam Lafferty. Lafferty, a call up from the Wilkes-Berre/Scranton Penguins has been amazing to start his NHL career. In his first 9 games, the 24-year-old has put up 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points. Lafferty averages 13:41 on the ice per game and has a Corsi For % of 43.12%.
Even with last night’s defeat, the Penguins are still a strong team. They are driven as Hell and have the ability to dominate other teams but sometimes things just fall flat. They have some of the best players in the league and will only be on the rise when players such as Evgeni Malkin and Brian Dumoulin comes back from injury. Keep your head up Pittsburgh because this season is going to just keep getting more electric.
