Everyone knew the Colorado Avalanche were bound to be good this season but they’re proving early that they’re absolutely outstanding.
The Avalanche are the last team that is undefeated in the league. They’re 5-0 through the start of the season and the secret to their success has been depth scoring.
There are only 3 Avalanche players (not counting goalies) that have 0 points on the season: Ian Cole (who has played in 1 game), Mark Barberio (who has played in 2 games), and Colin Wilson (who has played in 3 of 5 games).
Mikko Rantanen is leading the team with 9 points (4G 5A), Nate MacKinnon is 2nd with 8 points (2G 6A) and tied for 3rd in points is the Captain Gabe Landeskog with 6 points (2G 4A) alongside rookie defenseman Cale Makar (0G 6A).
Newcomers Andre Burakovsky (2G 3A), Nazem Kadri (2G 2A), and Joonas Donskoi (2G 1A) are all fitting in nicely in Colorado. Valeri Nichushkin, who struggled in Dallas last season, has an assist on this season.
Only one game has gone into OT (COLvsARI, October 12th) but other than that every other game has ended with the Avalanche above by at least 2 goals. They get the lead and assure their safety. Up next, the Avs will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins that have been on a tear of their own.
The Penguins are 4-2-0 on the season and have seen an amazing amount of depth scoring as well. They’ve won the last 3 games with the final scores being 2-1 (ANA), 7-4 (MIN), and 7-2 (WPG). It will be an interesting matchup as the Avs try to stay undefeated through the first 6 but we will have to wait until October 16th to see it happen.
