After a shaky season that ended with the Minnesota Wild missing out on playoffs and the firing of their GM, the team’s front office had made some big decisions today that are going to impact this team for years to come. The front office have been interviewing all kinds of candidates for the GM position this summer but the team has finally made their decision.
The Wild have selected Bill Guerin as their new GM. He was serving as Assistant GM for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and has been there since 2014. Craig Leipold, the Wild’s Owner, said today:
“I am thrilled to announce we have hired Bill Guerin, a four-time Stanley Cup champion, as General Manager of the Minnesota Wild. Bill has been a winner throughout his hockey career and I am extremely pleased to be able to add his experience to our organization and The State of Hockey.” (x)
Guerin wasted no time at all, already re-signing one player within his first few hours as GM.
Guerin resigned 22-year-old centre Joel Eriksson Ek to a two-year, $1,487,500 AAV contract, within his first few hours as GM. Eriksson Ek has played in 148 games over his 3 seasons with the Wild, putting up 16 goals, 21 assists for 37 point. At 6’1″, 208 lbs, he’s a tank with 78 blocked shits and 274 hits! Eriksson Ek is smart on both sides of the ice but, like every 22-year-old in he league, he can improve when it comes to consistence.
This was a smart move by Guerin, especially as his first action as GM. It shoes that he’s here and he’s ready to do the work to get this team into playoff contention. He sat and spoke with Ryan Carter:
