Julius Honka is still a RFA with the Dallas Stars but I don’t think he will remain a Star for much longer. The Stars have battled with Honka for the past 3 seasons. Honka has played in 87 games over the past 3 seasons with 2 goals and 11 assists in that time. Defensively, he has 74 blocked shots and 45 hits.
The Stars have 7 signed defensemen, not including Stephen Johns who is injured, so they don’t necessarily need Honka in this case. The team has quite a few defensemen in their ranks at the Texas Stars. Last season a number of those players, like Gavin Bayreuther or Dillon Heatherington, kept Dallas alive when they needed them most.
It would be better for for both parties to trade Honka for different players. Honka could go somewhere and get more playing time while the Stars grab players who need a change of pace as well.
