USA TAKES THE GOLD AT THE IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

TEAM USA HAS TAKEN THE GOLD AT THE WOMENS’ IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Team USA has snagged the gold at the World Championship in an exciting final game against Team Finland, that ended with a shootout.

The gold medal game started off with the Americans out shooting the Finnish 17-4 in the first 20 minutes. The score remained at 0 until there were only 5 minutes remaining in the 2nd where Annie Pankowski scored for the USA, pulling them into the lead. The Fins answered 2 minutes later with a goal by Susanna Tapani.

The third period remained scoreless and penalty-less before the game was pushed into overtime. The overtime only saw 14 shots from the Americans and 9 from the Finnish. The Americans also scooped up 4 PIM and the Finnish grabbed 2.

This pushed the game into a shootout. The Americans scored 2 goals, one by Amanda Kessel and Annie Pankowski grabbed her second of the game, sealing Team USA’s victory. The Finns grabbed one by Minnamari Tuominen.

This year, Team USA swept at the Women’s Worlds and shut out 4 of the 7 teams they faced. At the 2018 Four Nations Cup, they beat all 4 games they faced with 17 goals for and 5 goals against. In February, Team USA faced off against Team Canada for the Rivalry Series and had the whole Series broadcasted across the US and Canada.

It’s a big year for Team USA and women’s hockey as a whole. The leagues and game has grown so much and there are so many exciting things to come from here.
