With the announcement of the top 3 picks of the 2019 NHL Draft, speculation is already beginning to fly about who will be drafted and where they’ll be drafted to.
Kirby Dach is an 18 year-old, Canadian born, center. Dach has been spending the past 3 seasons in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades. So far in this season, Dach has played in 62 games with 73 points from 25 goals and 48 assists. Dach also has 40 penalty minutes and a +15 rating.
When it comes to his play style, he uses his 6’4″ and 198 lbs body in his favor. He’ll plow down defensemen when he drives to the net. He can deke them out with the gift of some unbelievable soft hands, but his physical presence is well-known. This kid has insane talent when it comes to protecting the puck, look at this goal:
Defensively, he’s good along the boards and, once again, uses his big stature to throw off the opponents’ offense.
Kirby is projected to be drafted 3rd overall, which would be the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks have struggled with defense for the past few seasons and Dach would be a breath of fresh air. The Hawks also have a promising young defenseman in Henri Jokiharju. Jokiharju played with the Blackhawks for 38 games last season, he collected 12 assists and a -12 rating before going to the AHL’s Rockford Icehogs. These two young players could find chemistry that the Blackhawks defense has been lacking.
Of course, Dach can always go higher or lower but I feel like his place would be highly valued if the Blackhawks choose to keep their draft pick. Overall, Dach is going to be picked high, top 5 at least, and he is going to grow as a big name in the NHL.
