The Oilers have been brewing this trade for a while now and it makes scene that they’re willing to trade Talbot. The Oilers need cap space to rebuild their organization. Exchanging a goaltender that has a $4.166 AAV for one that has a $761,250 AAV and a slightly better record is a smart move. Philly has been on a pretty good tear and they’re gonna need to find some goaltender consistency besides Carter Hart if they want to make it far in playoffs.
Talbot has been 10-15-3 this season with a .893 save percentage. Since Mikko Koskinen, Edmonton’s other goalie, was signed to a 3 year, $13.5 million contract ($2.5 million AAV), it was assumed that Talbot was on his way out considering that he’s in the final year of a 3-year $12.5 million contract ($4.166 million AAV) with restricted free agency coming up this summer.
Anthony Stolarz on the other hand has a 12 games for the Flyers this season and has a record of 4-3-3. Stolarz has a save percentage of .902 in the 2018-2019 season. The last time Stolarz was called up to the NHL was back in 2016-2017 for 7 games.
This is a trade that can work out really well for both teams. I feel like it also should be mentioned that the Flyers have had 8 goaltenders this season when Talbot plays his first game.
